The paper is devoted to asymptotic expansions for general sequences of linear positive operators and arbitrary intervals. Using the moments of operators, the degree of approximation is estimated in terms of the first and the second moduli of continuity and the optimality of the constants is discussed. The general results are illustrated with applications to Bernstein operators. Several improvements of a Videnskii type constant are presented and an involved conjecture is discussed.
