    The author considers a wave equation with localized nonlinear damping, namely, with the damping term \(a(x)|\partial_tu|^{r-1}\partial_tu\). The study of decay rates to such nonlinear problems is a delicate issue. This article demonstrates three different decay rates that may depend on the dimension or the presence of compactly supported initial data. These results depend on two main assumptions, one of which is the well-known Geometric Control Condition (see [\textit{C. Bardos} et al., SIAM J. Control Optim. 30, No. 5, 1024--1065 (1992; Zbl 0786.93009)]): {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] \(a(x)\) is a nonnegative function in \(L^\infty(\Omega)\) and there are \(\epsilon_0>0\) and \(L\) sufficiently large such that \( a(x)\geq \epsilon_0>0 \quad \text{for} \quad |x|\geq L\). \item[(2)] There exists an open set \(\omega\) such that \( \omega\subset\{x\in\Omega:a(x)>\epsilon_0>0\}\). \end{itemize}}
