For a Volterra integral operator with continuous periodic kernel depending on \(2 N\) variables, exponential growth is estimated. For this, the exponential characteristic \(\kappa=\kappa(\alpha)\) is defined; it turns out to be canonical in the sense that there exists an \(\alpha_0\) such that \(\kappa(\alpha)=\max(\alpha,\alpha_0)\). The result is applied to the boundary value problem for a general hyperbolic partial differential equation with periodic coefficients, where the right-hand side is subject to Goursat boundary conditions.
