The author examines the free surface motion of a layered medium of simple fluids driven by a rod undergoing torsional oscillations of small amplitude with the objective of demonstrating that in this case it is possible to determine the constitutive structure of a non-Newtonian liquid. The stress is expressed as a series of multiple integrals of polynomials in the strain histories and then expanded into a Fréchet series in terms of the amplitude of the oscillation of the rod. The rest state is perturbed with the aid of a perturbation technique. It is found that (a) at first order the flow fields are completely decoupled in each layer and that the particles move in circles with no contribution to the pressure field and height rise (b) at second order the motion is decomposed in each layer into a mean term and a time- periodic term oscillating with frequency twice as large as the frequency of the rod (c) at second order there is no flow in the mean in each layer and a nontrivial pressure field exists in every layer. The mean shapes and deviations from flatness at the rod of the interfaces between layers are determined. This is a well-written paper whose results will certainly be of interest to researchers in the field of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics.
