The scroll is a large class of determinantal varieties; see \textit{J. Harris}, ``Algebraic Geometry. A first course.'' Graduate Texts in Mathematics. 133 (1992; Zbl 0779.14001) for generalities on scrolls. In the present paper, the authors construct the Noether normalization of its coordinate ring. They say that the reduction number of the coordinate ring of a scroll is one. As an application, they compute the defining ideal of certain Rees algebras. Let \(I\) be a defining ideal of a semigroup ring of codimension \(2\). Then the defining ideal of the Rees algebra \(\bigoplus_{n \geq 0} I^n\) is generated by forms of degree at most \(2\).
