    The dynamics of the population is described by a Gurtin-MacCamy model (for each layer) of the form \[ {\partial p_j\over\partial t}+{\partial p_j\over\partial a}+ \mu_0(a)p_j+ \mu_j(a, S_j(t, y))p_j- K_j(a){\partial^2 p_j\over\partial y^2}= f_i \] in \((0,T)\times\Omega_j\), with \[ S_j(t, y)= \int^{a_\dag}_0 \int^{y_j}_{y_{j-1}} \gamma_j(a, y,z) p_j(t, a,z)\,dz\,da,\quad y\in (y_{j-1}, y_j). \] There are also initial and boundary value conditions. A detailed discussion of the integro\-differential partial equation is conducted and rigorous proofs are provided.
