Let \(R\) be a semiprime ring and \(F\) a generalized derivation on \(R\) with associated derivation \(d\) (i.e., \(F\) is an additive map on \(R\) such that \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xd(y)\) for all \(x,y\in R\)). \(F\) is said to act as a homomorphism (resp. anti-homomorphism) on the subset \(S\) of \(R\) if \(F(xy)=F(x)F(y)\) (resp. \(F(xy)=F(y)F(x)\)) for all \(x,y\in S\). The paper studies nonzero \(F\) which act as homomorphisms or anti-homomorphisms on nonzero ideals or left ideals. Two typical results are (a) if a nonzero \(F\) acts as a homomorphism on a nonzero left ideal \(L\), then \(Ld(L)=\{0\}\), \(F\) is a left multiplier map on \(L\) and \(L[F(x),x]=\{0\}\) for all \(x\in L\); (b) if a nonzero \(F\) acts as an anti-homomorphism on a nonzero ideal \(I\), then \(d(I)=\{0\}\) or \(R\) contains a nonzero central ideal.
