The so-called `calculus on measure chains' or `calculus on time scales' is designed to unify the treatment of differential and difference equations. In this general context, where the equations are called `dynamic equations', the underlying time set may be any closed subset of the reals. In this paper, for dynamic equations the author presents results on basic dynamic inequalities, proves existence and uniqueness theorems corresponding to Peano's and Perron's Theorem, discusses the existence of extremal solutions, develops a comparison principle and considers global existence of solutions and stability criteria as an application of the comparison principle.
