The author shows that the celebrated \textit{E. De Giorgi's} method [Mem. Accad. Sci. Torino, P. I., III. Ser. 3, 25--43 (1957; Zbl 0084.31901)] can be applied within a general Poincaré inequality framework. Three axioms for functions on a measure metric space are introduced. The essence is to show that a function satisfying the axioms is Hölder continuous and then to show that a function minimizing an appropriate energy must satisfy the axioms. The technique is applied to extremal functions satisfying a Poincaré inequality.
