This paper constructs certain indecomposable syzygy modules over graded hypersurface rings and gives a lower bound on their rank. This is shown to lead to the fact that there is no upper bound on the ranks of indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over the ring when the dimension is \(\leq 2\) and the multiplicity \(\leq 3.\) Specifically, let \(R=k[X_ 0,...,X_ d]/f\) be a hypersurface ring, where k is a field and f is a homogeneous polynomial of degree \(e\geq 3\). Denote the irrelevant maximal ideal by m, the Hilbert function by \(h_ R\), and the i-th syzygy module of a graded R-module M by \(\Omega^ i_ R(M)\). The authors prove that for any integer \(a\geq e\) the Cohen-Macaulay module \(\Omega_ R^{d+1}(R/m^ a)\) is indecomposable of rank \(\geq h_ R(a-1)\).
