It is well known that residual distribution methods are less sensitive to mesh variations, in contrast to finite volume methods. However, in most cases, most of the residual distribution methods are just first order accurate in space for unsteady calculations while the same methods are higher order accurate for the corresponding steady-state problems. The authors of the present paper develop a new class of residual distribution methods which preserves the spatial second-order accurate on unsteady-state problems. They also focus on pure mathematical analysis on the properties, such as positivity conditions, stability variations and the order of accuracy with respect to the grid skewness, for this newly developed residual distribution method.
