In the theory of vertex algebras of certain types constructing Heisenberg and conformal vectors and classifying them are important problems which are related to the structure of automorphism groups. In the paper under review the authors solve these problems in the case of the free bosonic vertex algebra \(V\). Their proof is based on the fact that a commutative vector in the free bosonic vertex algebra \(V\), a vector satisfying \([ Y(c,z_1), Y(c,z_2)]=0\), is proportional to the vacuum vector. As a consequence of their construction, they describe the full automorphism group of \(V\). They also discuss the complete reducibility of this vertex algebra as an \(sl_2\)-module.
