The author considers the discrepancy of continuous functions \(x:\mathbb{R}^ 1\to M\), where \(M\) is a compact, arcwise connected metric space. Lower bounds for the discrepancy can be established in terms of the arclength \(s\) [cf. \textit{M. Drmota}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 39, 501-527 (1989; Zbl 0665.10036)]. The aim of the present paper is to establish lower bounds without assuming the existence of the arclength but assuming a Lipschitz condition. The supremum in the discrepancy is formed with respect to general discrepancy systems \(\mathcal D\) which include, e.g. \({\mathcal D}_ Q\) (all cubes in arbitrary position on the \(K\)-dimensional torus), \({\mathcal D}_ B\) (all balls on the \(K\)-dimensional torus), and \({\mathcal D}_ C\) (all caps on the \(K\)-dimensional sphere). In the last three cases, improved bounds are obtained by Beck's Fourier transformation method. The results are generalized to continuous functions \(x:\mathbb{R}^ n\to M\). Finally the case of the so-called Lipschitz discrepancy is considered.
