Let \(\{T_t^\alpha\}_{t>0}\) be the heat-diffusion semigroup related to expansions with respect to the \(d\)-dimensional Laguerre functions \(\mathcal{L}_k^\alpha\) with \(\alpha\in (-1,\infty)^d\) and \[ T_\ast^\alpha f=\sup_{t>0}|T^\alpha_t f| \] the corresponding maximal operator. It is known that the operator \(T_\ast\) is bounded in \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^d_+), \;1<p\leq \infty\) and of weak \((1,1)\)-type, when \(\alpha\in [0,\infty)^d\). The main goal of the authors is to reveal the mapping properties of the maximal operator in the case where some of the \(\alpha_i\) may be negative. The case \(d=1\) is covered by the recent result of \textit{R. Macias, C. Segovia} and \textit{J. L. Torrea} [J. Funct. Anal. 229, No. 2, 300--316 (2005; Zbl 1093.42014)]. The authors show that in the case \(d\geq 2\) the results heavily depend both on \(\alpha\) and the dimension \(d\), in particular on the minimal value of \(\tilde{\alpha}=\min_i\alpha_i\) and on the number of \(\alpha_i\) which coincide with \(\tilde{\alpha}\).
