    Let \(A\) be an \(n\times n\) dilation matrix with \(L:=| \det A| \). Let \(\Psi\subset L^2(R^n)\) such that \(\Psi\) has \(L-1\) elements. Denote \[ V:=\overline{\text{span}}\{ \psi_{j,k}\; : \; j<0, k\in Z^n, \psi\in \Psi\}, \] where \(\psi_{j,k}:=| \det A| ^{j/2} \psi(A^j\cdot-k)\) and \(D^j(V):=\{ f(A^j \cdot)\; : \; f\in V\}\). Assume that \(\cap_{j\in Z} D^j(V)=\{0\}\) and \(\Psi\) is a tight framelet, that is, \[ \| f\| _2^2=\sum_{\psi\in \Psi} \sum_{j\in Z}\sum_{k\in Z^n} | \langle f, \psi_{j,k}\rangle| ^2 \qquad \forall\; f\in L^2(R^n). \] This paper shows that \(\Psi\) comes from a multiresolution analysis (MRA) if and only if \[ \sum_{\psi\in \Psi} \sum_{k\in Z^n} \sum_{j=1}^\infty | \widehat \psi((A^*)^j(\xi+k))| ^2>0 \quad \text{a.e.} \] As a consequence, the authors show that a compactly supported tight framelet comes from an MRA if \(\bigcap_{j\in Z} D^j(V)=\{0\}\). The authors also construct examples of non-tight framelets, which are arbitrarily close to tight framelets, such that \(\bigcap_{j\in Z} D^j(V)=L^2(R)\).
