The author considers the problem of the classification of \(p\)-groups containing an element \(p\) of order \(p\) such that \(C_G(t)=\langle t\rangle\times Z\), where \(Z\) is a cyclic group of order \(p^m\). This problem was solved for \(m=1\) by M. Suzuki (in this case we have the well known characterization of \(p\)-groups of maximal class) and for \(p=m=2\) in Proposition 10.27 of \textit{D. Gorenstein, R. Lyons}, and \textit{R. Solomon} [``The classification of the finite simple groups'', No. 2, Part 1, Chap. G, Providence (1995; Zbl 0836.20011)]. There are also some results on this problem by \textit{N. Blackburn} [Monatsh. Math. 99, 1-18 (1985; Zbl 0552.20010)] and \textit{Y. Berkovich} [J. Algebra 224, No. 2, 198-240 (2000; Zbl 0953.20007)]. The author obtains a complete solution of the problem in the case \(p=2\).
