The paper is a contribution to the theory of uniformities and metrics in the fuzzy setting and their relations with probabilistic metric spaces [see \textit{B. Schweizer} and \textit{A. Sklar}, Probabilistic metric spaces. North Holland Series in Probability and Applied Mathematics. New York-Amsterdam-Oxford: North-Holland. XVI, 275 p. (1983; Zbl 0546.60010); \textit{U. Höhle}, Fuzzy Sets Syst. 1, 311--332 (1978; Zbl 0413.54002)]. The author introduces the concepts of uniform environments, transformations between uniform environments and uniformities and metrics in a uniform environment. The uniform environment is defined as a functor from the category of sets to the opposite category of involutive, unital quantales and involutive closed unitial maps [see \textit{K. I. Rosenthal}, Quantales and their applications. Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series, 234. Harlow: Longman Scientific \& Technical; New York: John Wiley \& Sons, Inc. 165 p. (1990; Zbl 0703.06007)]. It enables to treat several well known uniformities (e.g. classical, probabilistic, Hutton) as special cases and to study relationships between them. The transformations among the uniform environments for these uniformities are collected together and their topological meaning is explained.
