This paper deals with nonlinear singular integral equations of the form \[ \begin{aligned} G (x,u(x)) &= {1\over \pi} \int^1_{-1} {u(y) dy \over (y - x)} + d, \qquad -1 \leq x \leq 1\\ \text{and}\\ u(x) &= {1\over \pi} \int^1_{-1} {F(y, u(y))\over(y -x)} dy + f(x) + d, \qquad -1 \leq x \leq 1\end{aligned} \] occurring for instance by investigating certain free boundary value problems (the integrals are to be understood in the sense of Cauchy principal value integrals). Two methods are used for finding an approximate solution. The first one is based on an orthogonal projection while the second one is based on collocation at the zeros of certain orthogonal polynomials.
