The Gompertz curve is a useful tool for the mathematical modeling of various phenomena. The authors discuss the problem of finding suitable parameters such that the resulting special case of the curve fits a given data set in a least squares sense. A theory describing necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an optimal solution is given, and an algorithm is constructed that can be used to find the optimal solution. A crucial point for this iterative algorithm is the choice of the starting values. This problem is discussed in detail.
