The author studies slow invariant manifolds in a generalised Lorenz-Krishnamurty model of slow-fast interactions in the atmosphere [\textit{R. Camassa} and \textit{S.-K. Tin}, J. Atmos. Sci. 53, No. 22, 3251--3264 (1996; Zbl 0936.86001)], as well as in a conservative variant thereof \textit{J. Vanneste} [SIAM J. Appl. Dyn. Syst. 7, No. 4, 1163--1190 (2008; Zbl 1167.37045)], by application of the flow curvature method [the author, Differential geometry applied to dynamical systems. With CD-ROM. World Scientific Series On Nonlinear Science. Series A 66. Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific (2009; Zbl 1201.37001)]. Accordingly, slow manifolds in singularly perturbed systems are approximated by so-called flow curvature manifolds on which the highest curvature of the corresponding flow vanishes, while their invariance is then proven via \textit{G. Darboux}'s invariance theorem [Darboux Bull. (2) 2, 60--96 (1878; JFM 10.0214.01)]. The approximations thus obtained in the Lorenz-Krishnamurty model are valid to eighteenth order and to thirteenth order, respectively, in the relevant singular perturbation parameters; moreover, they are consistent with previous work in both cases.
