The paper under review examines when a satellite knot with a Berge-Gabai knot as its pattern admits an \(L\)-space surgery. An \(L\)-space is a rational homology \(3\)-sphere whose Heegaard Floer homology group has the simplest form. More precisely, the hat version of Heegaard Floer homology is a free abelian group whose rank equals the order of the first homology group. Lens spaces and elliptic manifolds are typical examples. A knot in the \(3\)-sphere is called an \(L\)-space knot if it admits a positive Dehn surgery yielding an \(L\)-space. The classification of \(L\)-space knots is open, in general. For cable knots, \textit{M. Hedden} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2009, No. 12, 2248--2274 (2009; Zbl 1172.57008)] and \textit{J. Hom} [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 11, No. 1, 219--223 (2011; Zbl 1221.57019)] determined when a cable knot is an \(L\)-space knot. The role of the present paper is to generalize this. A Berge-Gabai knot is a knot in a solid torus which admits a non-trivial Dehn surgery yielding a solid torus. Such a knot is either a torus knot or a \(1\)-bridge braid. The main result of the paper claims that a satellite knot with a non-trivial companion and a Berge-Gabai knot as its pattern is an \(L\)-space knot if and only if the companion is an \(L\)-space knot and the Berge-Gabai knot satisfies a certain condition. Any Berge-Gabai knot is described by three parameters, and the condition is an inequality between these parameters. Since cable knots are special cases of these satellite knots, this result is a generalization of the above one. The necessity is established by using an evaluation of Heegaard Floer homology. As a corollary, when such a satellite knot is an \(L\)-space knot, the Ozsváth-Szabó concordance invariant and the smooth four ball genus are determined. Also, \(L\)-spaces with given numbers of hyperbolic pieces and Seifert fibered pieces are constructed by using an iteration of cabling and a hyperbolic Berge-Gabai knot pattern.
