The author considers the Littlewood-Paley function on \(\mathbb{R}^n\) given by \(g_\varphi(f)(x)=(\int_0^\infty |f*\varphi_t(x)|^2 \frac{dt}{t})^{1/2}\) where, as usual \(\varphi_t(x)=t^{-n}\varphi(t^{-1}x)\) and \(\varphi\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\) and \(\int \varphi =0\). It is well known that for concrete functions \(Q\) with some extra properties one has \(c_1 \|f\|_{H^p}\le \|g_Q(f)\|_p\le c_2 \|f\|_{H^p}\) for \(0<p<\infty\) where the Hardy spaces \(H^p\) are defined by means of the maximal function. The result for \(0<p\le 1\) and \(Q(x)=[(\partial/\partial t)P(x,t)]_{t=1}\) where \(P(x,t)\) is the Poisson kernel, was first proved by \textit{A. Uchiyama} (see [Stud. Math. 81, 135--158 (1985; Zbl 0603.42019)]). The aim of the paper is to prove the inequality \(\|f\|_{H^p}\le C \|g_\varphi(f)\|_p\) for \(0<p\le 1\) for a class of functions \(\varphi\) with no restriction on the support of \(\hat \varphi\) and satisfying some admissible non-degeneracy conditions. The result follows as an application of a vector-valued inequality which is shown using the Peetre maximal function \(F^{**}_{N,R}(x)= \sup_{y\in \mathbb{R}^n} \frac{|F(x-y)|}{(1+R|y|)^N}\) (see [\textit{J. Peetre}, Ark. Mat. 13, 123--130 (1975; Zbl 0302.46021)]).
