When does the solution to an ODE, \(\dot x=f(x)\), depend polynomially on the initial condition \(x_ 0=x(0)?\) It is shown that the vector field f(x) must then be polynomial, and complete (i.e. the solutions exist globally for all time t), and that the solution \(x(t)=\phi (t,x_ 0)\) is globally polynomial in \(x_ 0\) of bounded degree. In dimension two one can then invoke a theorem of Jung-Van der Kulk, on the group of polynomial automorphisms of the plane, to give a complete classification, with normal forms, of such polynomial flows in the plane.
