The purpose of the paper is described in its title. Let \(M\) be a number field and \(K\) a quartic extension of \(M\). Using the main ideas of earlier joint work with \textit{A. Pethö} [J. Number Theory 57, 90-104 (1996; Zbl 0853.11023), J. Symb. Comput. 16, 563-584 (1993; Zbl 0808.11023)], where a method for solving index form equations is developed, the authors reduce their problem to that of solving a cubic and several corresponding quartic relative Thue equations over \(M\). These equations determine the generators of power integral bases of \(K\) over \(M\) up to translation by integers of \(M\) and multiplication by unit factors of \(M\). The method is based on a recent method of the authors for solving efficiently relative Thue equations [Math. Comput. 71, 429-440 (2002; Zbl 0985.11070)]. Two rather detailed examples are given: The first deals with a field of degree 12 over \(\mathbb{Q}\) having a cubic subfield and the second with a field of degree 8 over \(\mathbb{Q}\) having a quadratic subfield.
