The author considers the unique continuation problem for the evolution problem \[ u_ t(x,t)=\sum^ m_{j=0}a_ j(t)D^ ju(x,t),\;m \geq 1,\;x \in \mathbb{R}^ n,\;t \in \mathbb{R}. \] Using some basic facts of Hardy functions the author obtains a Carleman type inequality. He deduces from it a necessary and sufficient condition (when \(n=1)\) for any nonzero solution in the class of \(C(\mathbb{R};L^ 2(\mathbb{R}))\) to have a support on a horizontal half-line in the \((x,t)\)-space at two different times. A related result is proven for the higher space dimension case \((n>1)\).
