Let \(P\in {\mathbb Z}[X]\) be an irreducible polynomial of degree \(\geq 3\) with leading coefficient \(a_0\) and \(F={\mathbb Q}(\alpha)\), where \(P(\alpha)=0\). The author deals with the problem of solving the resultant equation \(\text{Res}(P,Q)=a\), when \(a\) is a given nonzero integer and \(Q\) is an unknown monic quadratic polynomial \(X^2+x_1X+x_2\in {\mathbb Z}[X]\). This leads to a so-called inhomogeneous Thue equation \(a_0^2 N_{F/{\mathbb Q}}(x_2+x_1\alpha+\alpha^2)=a\), for the explicit solution of which the author proposes a method. As an application, all monic quadratic polynomials \(Q[X]\in {\mathbb Z}[X]\) are computed for which \(\text{Res}(P,Q)=\pm 1\), where \(P(X)=X^5-5X^3+X^2+3X-1\).
