The surface motion of a layered acoustic half-space resulting from a traction applied at a point on the (otherwise stress-free) surface is considered. The aim of this paper is to study the reflection inversion problem; for a given surface trace data g, and to solve the functional equation \(F(\rho,\lambda)=g\) for the acoustic parameters \(\rho\),\(\lambda\). A formal linearization DF for F is defined and its `Precritical' projection in terms of truncated Radon transform is shown to be a well-conditioned functional of the perturbations \(\delta\rho\), \(\delta\lambda\). The plane-wave equations satisfied by the Radon- transformed field up to a smooth error are used to compute the spectral properties of the perturbational relationship.
