Let \(\ell\) be an odd prime number. Eisenstein's reciprocity law states that \((a/\alpha) = (\alpha/a)\), where \((\,\cdot\,/\,\cdot\,)\) is the \(\ell\)-th power residue symbol in the field \(\mathbb Q(\zeta)\) of \(\ell\)-th roots of unity, where \(a\) is a rational integer not divisible by \(\ell\), and \(\alpha \in \mathbb Z[\zeta]\) is semi-primary, i.e., satisfies the congruence \(\alpha \equiv 1 \bmod (1 - \zeta)^2\). This reciprocity law was subsequently generalized by \textit{A. E. Western} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 6, 16--28, 265--297 (1908; JFM 39.0254.02)] and \textit{H. Hasse} [Math. Ann. 97, 599--623 (1927; JFM 53.0145.02)], but both authors had to overcome considerable technical problems. In the present article, the authors derive sufficient conditions for \((a/\alpha) = (\alpha/a)\) (for arbitrary exponents \(n\)) from the general reciprocity law in cyclotomic number fields given by \textit{S. V. Vostokov} [St. Petersbg. Math. J. 20, No. 6, 929--936 (2009; Zbl 1206.11137)].
