Let \(X\subset\mathbb P^r\) \((r>3)\) be an irreducible, reduced, nondegenerate, projective curve. One says that \(X\) is \(n\)-regular if \(H^i (\mathbb P^r,{\mathcal I}_X\otimes{\mathcal O}_{\mathbb{P}^r}(n-i))=0\) for all \(i>0\). Problems of bounding the regularity by degree and codimension and describing extremal cases have been studied by several authors. \textit{L. Gruson}, \textit{L. R. Lazarsfeld} and \textit{C. Peskine} [Invent. Math. 72, 491--506 (1983; Zbl 0565.14014)] proved that every curve \(X\) is \((d-r+2)\)-regular, and classified all curves which are not \((d-r+1)\)-regular \((d=\) degree of \(X)\). \textit{A. Noma} [Math. Ann. 322, No. 1, 69--74 (2002; Zbl 1054.14516)] proved that when \(0<l\leq\min\{p_a(X),r-2\}\), \(X\) is \((d-r+2-l)\)-regular unless \(X\) is linearly normal of degree \(d\geq 2p_a(X)+2\) and arithmetic genus \(p_a(X)=l\). In the present paper the author proves that this previous bound is sharp, and in certain cases it is attained by hyperelliptic curves. Moreover he proves that if \(X\) is nonhyperelliptic and has geometric genus \(\geq r+2\), then it is \((d-2r+3)\)-regular.
