Both of the authors of this article have been very successful in giving some kind of unified uniqueness proofs for sporadic simple groups like \(J_ 4\), \(LyS\), \(F_ 1\), \(Co_ 1\), \(F_ 2\), \(F_ 5\). All these proofs use what the authors call uniqueness systems. These then provide us with a graph on which the group in question acts. One then has to show that this graph is simply connected, which is equivalent to show that the graph is triangulable. The paper under review develops a general theory of uniqueness systems and provides us with some properties which imply that the graph mentioned before is triangulable. Furthermore they indicate how \(p\)-local geometries might be used to construct uniqueness systems. Finally they sketch the uniqueness proof of the Monster simple group due to \textit{R. Griess}, \textit{U. Meierfrankenfeld} and the second author [ibid. 130, 567-602 (1989; Zbl 0691.20014)].
