The classification of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras has been given [\textit{P. Eberlein}, Contemp. Math. 332, 37--72 (2003; Zbl 1045.17003)]. The present paper finishes the classification for these algebras which are over the real numbers and when the derived algebra is two dimensional. The approach is to use known results on Lie algebras of matrices. The cases are broken down into when the algebra is decomposable or not. When decomposable, there are three cases. When indecomposable of dimension $n$, when $n=3$, there are three cases, when $n=4$, there are four cases, and when \(n\geq 5\), the cases break down into when n is even or odd.
