A new class of adaptive controllers with better transient performances is presented. In section 2 a general form of adaptive control systems with reference model is studied. The performance of the adaptive system are analyzed in section 3 and techniques to improve the transient performances are proposed. The \(L_ 2\) and \(L_ \infty\) performances are analyzed and the dependence of the \(L_ \infty\) performance on the parameter uncertainty and the design parameters is studied. In section 4 some performances of the nonadaptive section which does not achieve asymptotic tracking are presented. It is proved that the mean- square performance can be made accurate to the desired extent. Two theorems are also proved for the stability and mean-square performance and tracking performance. A comparison between a linear nonadaptive controller and a nonlinear adaptive system is presented in section 5. It is proved that adaptation is an efficient tool for reducing the effects of large parametric uncertainty without unacceptable widening of the system bandwidth.
