An upper subderivative of a lower semicontinuous function defined on a Riemannian manifold is introduced and an approximate mean value theorem for it is given. This result is used then for characterizing convex lower semicontinuous functions on Hadamard manifolds in terms of the monotonicity of their subdifferential mappings, extending previous statements from the literature. A small example is provided for illustrating the new results.
