The classical notion of extinction of a population is that the size of the population be zero at some time. For differential equation models with uniqueness and a trivial solution this can occur only as \(t\to \infty.\) After a discussion of the desirability, both mathematically and biologically, of generalizing this concept, the authors introduce the notion of extinction at a population threshold. They then study the implications of this generalization for finite and infinite time extinction.
