For a star body \(K\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and for \(1\leq p\leq\infty\), let \(\Gamma^*_pK\) be the unit ball of the norm defined by \[ \| x\|_{\Gamma^*_pK}:= \Biggl\{{1\over c_{n,p}V(K)} \int_K | x\cdot y|^pdy\Biggr\}^{1/p}, \] where \(c_{n,p}\) is a certain constant and \(V\) denotes the volume; here the case \(p= \infty\) has to be interpreted as a limit. The main result of the present paper says that the functional \(V(K)V(\Gamma^*_pK)\) attains its maximum precisely if \(K\) is an ellipsoid centered at the origin. If \(K\) is a centered convex body, then \(\Gamma^*_\infty K\) is the polar body of \(K\), and the result reduces to the classical Blaschke-Santaló inequality. The proof of the generalization uses dual mixed volumes, Steiner symmetrization, and Brunn-Minkowski theory. A consequence is the interesting inequality \[ \int_{S^{n-1}} \int_{S^{n-1}}| u\cdot v|^p f(u)g(v)du dv\geq c_{n- 2,p}\| f\|_{{n\over n+p}}\| g\|_{{n\over n+p}} \] for \(p\geq 1\) and positive continuous real functions \(f\), \(g\) on the unit sphere \(S^{n-1}\), where \(\|\cdot\|_p\) denotes the \(L_p\)-norm. The equality cases are characterized. The paper mentions also a couple of open problems.
