A simple explicit counterexample is provided to the following conjecture attributed by \textit{D. Puppe} to \textit{J. C. Moore} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 70, 379-394 (1959; Zbl 0088.39101)]: Conjecture. If \(M_*\) is a simplicial monoid such that \(\pi_0(|M_*|)\) is a group, then the universal group completion \(U\) induces a homotopy equivalence \(|M_* |\to|UM_*|\) where \(|\;|\) denotes geometric realisation.
