Motivated by the study of restrictions of highest weight modules and the translation principle, the authors introduce the notion of ``higher Dirac cohomology'' to generalize the existing notion of ``Dirac cohomology''. Note that the latter was introduced by Vogan in 1997, and the Dirac operator for Lie groups can be traced back to Parthasarathy's study of the discrete series in the 1970's. As explained in the paper, when the concerned module does not have infinitesimal character, but only generalized infinitesimal character, then Dirac cohomology may lose its good properties. In the paper under review, the authors introduce the higher Dirac cohomology, establish the corresponding version of the Vogan conjecture for it. They also define the higher and Dirac index and investigate its functor properties. A final remark is that in Theorem 4.3 of \textit{C.-P. Dong} and \textit{J.-S. Huang} [Adv. Math. 226, No. 4, 2911--2934 (2011; Zbl 1221.22014)], Dirac cohomology of modules with generalized infinitesimal character has been considered.
