Given an operad \(\mathcal O\), a natural question is whether the category of algebras over that operad in a given model category itself has the structure of a model category. In general, answering this question requires dealing with subtle cofibrancy issues, and to get results for algebras in a fairly general model category one has to put fairly restrictive conditions on the operad. The purpose of this paper is to show that much less restrictive results can be obtained when one considers algebras over an operad in the category of symmetric spectra with the positive \(S\) model structure. More specifically, the main result of the paper says that the relative composition product of modules over an operad is well-behaved with respect to cofibrations. Variants and consequences of this result have appeared previously in the literature, but besides being a generalization, the treatment here allows for a more streamlined approach to various consequences.
