The main objective of the paper is to analyze the possible power series representation of the Hill's discriminant in the case of linear second-order ordinary differential equations. This representation offers information about the construction of (quasi) periodic solutions. The main section of the paper describes the spectral parameter power series representation of the Hill's discriminant in order to obtain numerical evaluations of the Mathieu eigenvalues for a periodic Sturm-Liouville operator. The power series of the spectral distance are obtained with respect to the first eigenvalue, and their efficiency is numerically tested for the Mathieu equation.
