The densest packing of congruent circles in \(\mathbb{R}^2\) was determined by L. Fejes Tóth in 1940. He gave the first complete proof of Kepler's conjecture. In the optimal case, we have to arrange the centres of the circles in the vertices of a regular triangular lattice. The problem for lattice arrangements is much simplier and solved by Lagrange in 1773. The author gives a variant of the proof in the lattice case.
