A polynomial map \(f:\mathbb{C}^{2}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}\) is called rational if its generic fibre is of genus zero (i.e. it is a rational curve). The mapping \(f\) extends to a rational map \(\overline{f}:\mathbb{P}^{2}\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1\). If we resolve the points of indeterminacy of \(\overline{f}\) we get a regular map \(\widetilde{f}:X\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1\) such that \(\widetilde{f}| \mathbb{C}^{2}=f\) (it is \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\subset X\)). The divisor \(D=X\setminus\mathbb{C}^{2}\) consists of a union of rational curves. If \(E\) is such a rational curve then \(\deg( \widetilde{f}| E) \) of \(\widetilde{f}| E:E\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^1\) is called the degree of \(E.\) \(E\) is called horizontal if \(\deg( \widetilde {f}| E) >0,\) i.e. \(\widetilde{f}| E\) is not constant. A rational polynomial map \(f:\mathbb{C}^{2}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}\) is of simple type if each horizontal curve \(E\) of \(f\) is degree \(1.\) The authors give the complete classification of rational polynomial maps of simple type up to polynomial automorphisms of the domain \(\mathbb{C}^{2}\) and the range \(\mathbb{C}.\) It improves the similar result by \textit{M. Miyanishi} and \textit{T. Sugie} [Osaka J. Math 17, 339--362 (1980; Zbl 0457.13006)].
