The Camassa-Holm equation admits weak dissipative solutions with finite energy. Uniqueness of dissipative solutions has been an outstanding open problem. In this paper, the author studies the propagation of energy density in finite-energy dissipative solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. By using the methods based on generalized characteristics, the author shows that the parts of energy related to positive and negative slopes of the dissipative solutions are one-sided weakly continuous functions of time. This result enables the author to define certain measures of dissipation for both parts of energy. The methods work not only for the Camassa-Holm equation but for other related nonlinear evolution equations.
