The author proves a concavity result for Hermitian matrices which goes as follows. Let \(A\) be Hermitian, \(Z\) be expansive (i.e., \(Z^{*}Z\geq I\)) and \(f\) be a concave function on \([0,\infty)\). Then \[ \| f(Z^{*}AZ)\| \leq \| Z^{*}f(A)Z\| \] holds for all symmetric norms. This is a complementary inequality of the classical trace inequality due to \textit{L. G. Brown} and \textit{H. Kosaki} [J. Oper. Theory 23, 3--19 (1990; Zbl 0718.46026)].
