The main result of this paper is: If a compact hypercomplex manifold \((M,I,J,K)\) admits a Kähler metric compatible with \(I\), then \((M,I)\) is holomorphically symplectic. This can be viewed as an obstruction to the existence of a hypercomplex structure on a complex manifold of Kähler type. The main steps of the proof are interesting by themselves. Namely, the author shows that, under the above assumptions: (1) There exists a finite non-ramified covering \(\widetilde M\rightarrow M\) with the canonical bundle of \((\widetilde M,I)\) trivial as a holomorphic vector bundle; (2) \((M,I,J,K)\) admits a compatible HKT metric, invariant under the natural SU(2)-action. Besides the result itself, one of the main interests of the paper is the use of HKT geometry to derive a statement not refering to it.
