Let \(k[z]\) be the polynomial algebra over a field of characteristic \(0\). For any \(\lambda, \eta\in k, \lambda\neq0\) and \(\phi(z)\in k[z]\), one can define the generalized Weyl algebra \(k[z; \lambda,\eta, \phi(z)]\). An algebra \(A\) is said to be homologically smooth if \(A\) has a finitely generated projective resolution of finite length as an \(A\)-\(A\)-bimodule. By a result of \textit{V. Bavula} [Bull. Sci. Math. 120, No. 3, 293--335 (1996; Zbl 0855.16010)], it is necessary that \(\pi(z)\) does not have multiple roots for the generalized Weyl algebra to be homologically smooth. In the present paper, the author shows that the condition is also sufficient. More precisely, the author computes the Hochschild cohomological dimensional, which is \(2\), and the algebra is twisted Calabi-Yau, by constructing a homotopy double complex. The author also studies the formal deformation of the generalized Weyl algebra using Hochschild cohomology.
