Let \(G\) be a locally compact group, \(1\leq p<\infty\). A continuous unitary representation \(\pi\) of \(G\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) is an \(L^p\)-representation if there exists a dense subset \(X\subset H\) such that the matrix coefficient functions \(g\mapsto \langle\pi(g)x,x\rangle\) lie in \(L^p(G)\) for any \(x\in X\). Following the ideas of [\textit{N. P. Brown} and \textit{E. P. Guentner}, Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 45, No. 6, 1181--1193 (2013; Zbl 1337.46039)], the author considers the \(L^p\)-Fourier algebras \(A_{L^p}(G)\) of matrix coefficient functions of \(L^p\)-representations. Similarly he defines the \(L^p\)-Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. It is shown that: (i) For \(1\leq p\leq 2\), the \(L^p\)-Fourier algebra coincides with the Fourier algebra \(A(G)\). (ii) Each \(L^p\)-Fourier algebra is distinct for \(2<p<\infty\). (iii) Each \(L^p\)-Fourier algebra is a complete invariant for the underlying locally compact group \(G\). However, the \(L^p\)-Fourier algebras can lack many nice properties that hold for \(A(G)\). The relation to amenability is discussed, and the case \(G=SL(2,\mathbb R)\) is considered in detail. Similar results are provided for \(L^p\)-Fourier-Stieltjes algebras.
