The authors prove that the equation \(\epsilon u_{tt}+\alpha (x)u_{t}+\beta (x)u-\sum (a_{ij}(x)u_{x_{j}})_{x_{i}}=f(x,u)\) generates a nonlinear continuous semigroup which has a global attractor. The function \(f(x,u)\) is supposed to have critical or subcritical growth. The proofs of the main results are based on the so-called tail estimates for solutions of the above equation.
