The paper is devoted to non-conservative solutions of fragmentation equations [see e.g. \textit{E. D. McGrady} and \textit{R. M. Ziff}, ``Shattering'' transition in fragmentation. Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 892--895 (1987)] in the case of negative splitting parameter. The author concentrates on the generalization of the weak form of the fragmentation equation with a self-similar dynamics. The main purpose of the paper is to characterize the large time behavior of solutions to the fragmentation equation. The line of reasoning is based on the analysis of nonincerasing self-similar Markov processes [e.g. \textit{J. Lamperti}, Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheor. Verw. Geb. 22, 205--225 (1972; Zbl 0274.60052)] conditioned on non-extinction. The results are obtained under some assumptions on regular variation on the fragmentation rate and the behavior of the Levy measure associated with the corresponding self-similar Markov process. The results are illustrated by five examples describing fragmentation processes.
