The author analyzes the Seiberg-Witten equations on a Riemannian 3-manifold which admits a Killing vector field of constant positive length satisfying an additional technical condition. The paper consists of four parts. In the first the geometric background is analyzed, metric almost contact structurcs (m.a.c., henceforth) are introduced, and Killing m.a.c. manifolds are analyzed. Tue second part is devoted to Dirac operators on m.a.c. manifolds. The third part studies adiabatic limits of solutions of 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten equations and the fourth part deals with variational features of the adiabatic moduli spaces on a smooth \(S^1\)-fibration over a surface.
