\textit{I. B. Frenkel} [Representations of Kac-Moody algebras and dual resonance models, in: Applications of group theory in physics and mathematical physics (Chicago, 1982), Lect. Appl. Math. 21, 325-353 (1985; Zbl 0558.17013)] constructed a vertex representation for the Kac-Moody Lie algebra associated to a symmetric generalized Cartan matrix. In the paper under review, the author generalizes Frenkel's construction. First, an affinization of the quantum Kac-Moody algebra associated to a symmetric generalized Cartan matrix is introduced. Based on the affinization, a representation of the quantum Kac-Moody algebra is constructed by vertex operators from bosonic fields. As a consequence of the proof of the quantum Serre relations, a combinatorial identity with Hall-Littlewood polynomials is obtained.
